Lesson 5 · Lanes and turns
When can you make a U-turn?
Short answer
Only where it is allowed and safe: no sign forbidding it, a clear view of traffic, and a gap in oncoming cars. Never on a curve, hill or near a railroad crossing.
Watch it play out
How to do it
- Check for a No U-turn sign.
- Signal left and use the left-most lane.
- Yield to oncoming traffic and people crossing.
- Turn when you have a clear gap and a clear view.
Why the rule works this way
A U-turn is slow and crosses every lane. You need a long, clear view so others have time to see you.
Common mistakes
- U-turning on a curve or hill where oncoming drivers cannot see you.
- U-turning across a double yellow line in the middle of a block where it is not allowed.
State differencesRules vary. Many states ban U-turns in business districts except at intersections, and near hills, curves and railroad crossings.
Questions people ask
Can I make a U-turn at a green arrow?
It depends on your state. Some states, like California, allow a U-turn on a green arrow unless a No U-turn sign is posted. Others, like Oregon, allow U-turns at a signal only where a sign permits it. Always yield to oncoming traffic first.
