Lesson 5 · Lanes and turns
How far before a turn should you signal?
Short answer
At least 100 feet before you turn or change lanes in most states. Signal early so others can plan.
Watch it play out
How to do it
- Check your mirrors.
- Turn on your signal at least 100 feet before the turn.
- Move into the correct lane and slow down.
- Make sure the signal turns off after the turn.
Why the rule works this way
Your signal tells drivers, cyclists and people walking what you are about to do. Signaling late gives them no time to react.
Common mistakes
- Signaling as you turn, or not at all.
- Leaving the signal on after the turn.
State differencesSome states require more at higher speeds, such as 200 feet outside towns. Virginia requires 100 feet above 35 mph and 50 feet at lower speeds. Check your state handbook.
