Lesson 5 · Lanes and turns

Which lane do you turn into when turning left?

Short answer

The left-most lane going your direction, just right of the center line. Then change lanes later if you need to.

Watch it play out

How to do it

  1. Signal and get into the left-most lane before the turn.
  2. Wait for a safe gap, and yield to oncoming traffic and people crossing.
  3. Turn into the lane just right of the center line.
  4. Change lanes later, after signaling and checking your blind spot.

Why the rule works this way

When two lanes turn at once, or cars turn right from the other side, every driver needs to land in their own lane.

Common mistakes

  • Cutting across to the far right lane.
  • Starting the turn too early and clipping the corner.

Questions people ask

What about double left-turn lanes?

Stay in your lane through the turn. The left lane ends in the left lane and the right lane ends in the right lane.
