Rules of the road

Accuracy disclaimer

We work hard to keep every rule and sign correct, but this site does not replace your state's official driver handbook or the law.

The official source always winsIf anything on this site conflicts with your state's driver handbook, a traffic law, a road sign, a police officer or a test examiner, follow the official source.

Not legal advice

The lessons, games and practice tests are general educational material. They are not legal advice, and nothing here creates any professional or legal relationship. For a specific legal question, such as a ticket or an accident, talk to a qualified attorney or your state agency.

Laws vary and change

Traffic laws differ from state to state, and sometimes between cities and counties. Rules on phones, move-over laws, school buses, turns on red and teen licensing differ the most. Laws also change. Content was last checked against official sources in October 2026, and some of it may be out of date by the time you read it.

Simplified for learning

To make the rules easier to learn, some scenarios, illustrations and game situations are simplified. Real roads have more variables, such as weather, traffic, local signs and other drivers' mistakes. Always use judgment and drive defensively.

Practice tests are not official exams

Our practice questions are written in the style of permit test questions. They are not taken from any DMV's real exam. A good practice score is a helpful sign, but it does not guarantee you will pass.
