Lesson 5 · Lanes and turns
Which lane do you turn into when turning right?
Short answer
The right lane, the one closest to you. Do not swing wide into a farther lane.
Watch it play out
How to do it
- Signal and move to the right lane before the turn.
- Slow down and check the crosswalk.
- Turn close to the curb into the nearest lane.
- Signal and check your blind spot if you need to change lanes afterward.
Why the rule works this way
Other drivers may be turning at the same time. Staying in the nearest lane keeps everyone in a predictable path.
Common mistakes
- Swinging wide into the left lane.
- Changing lanes in the middle of the turn.
