Lesson 6 · Passing and highways
When is it safe to pass on a two-lane road?
Short answer
Only where the center line is broken on your side, the road ahead is clear for a long way, and you can return to your lane well before oncoming traffic.
Watch it play out
How to do it
- Check that the center line is broken on your side and the road ahead is clear.
- Check mirrors and blind spot, then signal left.
- Pass without lingering, and do not exceed the speed limit.
- Signal right and return when you see the passed vehicle in your rearview mirror.
Why the rule works this way
Passing puts you in the oncoming lane. Broken lines mark places where drivers can see far enough to do it safely.
Common mistakes
- Cutting back in too close to the vehicle you passed.
- Starting a pass near a hill, curve or intersection.
In VirginiaDo not pass on hills, curves, at intersections or railroad crossings, or where a solid line is on your side. Finish passing before a no passing zone begins. See all Virginia rules
Questions people ask
Can I speed to pass?
In almost every state, no. The speed limit still applies while passing. A few states, like Idaho, allow a short burst over the limit to pass on some two-lane highways. If you would need to speed a lot, do not pass.
