Rules of the road
Lesson 6 · Passing and highways

Which lane should you drive in on a multi-lane highway?

Short answer

Cruise in the right lane. Use the left lane to pass, then move back to the right.

Watch it play out

How to do it

  1. Drive in the right lane when you are not passing.
  2. To pass, check mirrors and blind spot, signal and move left.
  3. Return to the right lane once you are safely past.
  4. If someone comes up fast behind you in the left lane, move right when it is safe.

Why the rule works this way

Keeping the left lane open for passing reduces weaving and tailgating, which are big causes of highway crashes.

Common mistakes

  • Camping in the left lane.
  • Passing on the right because someone is slow in the left lane, unless your state allows it.

Questions people ask

What about highways with three or more lanes?
