Lesson 3 · Sharing the road
How much space should you give a cyclist when passing?
Short answer
At least 3 feet in most states, and more at higher speeds. Wait for a safe gap in oncoming traffic before you pass.
Watch it play out
How to do it
- Slow down and stay back until you can see a clear gap.
- Move left so there are at least 3 feet between your car and the bike.
- Pass, then check your mirror before moving back.
- Never honk to make a cyclist move.
Why the rule works this way
Bikes can wobble to avoid potholes and debris, and a close pass can knock a rider over. Extra space is a buffer for both of you.
Common mistakes
- Squeezing past in the same lane.
- Cutting back in right after passing.
State differencesAt least 35 states and DC set a 3-foot minimum. Pennsylvania and New Jersey require 4 feet, and some states require a full lane change on multi-lane roads.
In VirginiaPass at least 3 feet away. If the lane is too narrow for that, change lanes. You may cross a double yellow line to pass a cyclist when it is safe. See all Virginia rules
