Lesson 3 · Sharing the road
How far behind another car should you drive?
Short answer
At least 3 seconds behind. Add more time in rain, at night, or behind trucks and motorcycles.
Watch it play out
How to do it
- Pick a fixed spot ahead, like a sign or a shadow.
- When the car ahead passes it, count "one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three".
- If you reach the spot before you finish, drop back.
- Use 4 seconds or more in rain, fog, at night or behind large trucks.
Why the rule works this way
It takes about 1.5 seconds just to react and start braking. The rest of the gap is room to stop. Seconds work at any speed, unlike car lengths.
Common mistakes
- Tailgating to keep others from cutting in.
- Using the same gap in bad weather.
In VirginiaVirginia teaches a 2-3-4 second rule: 2 seconds under 35 mph, 3 seconds at 35 to 45 mph, 4 seconds at 46 to 70 mph. Add more in bad weather. See all Virginia rules
Questions people ask
Why seconds instead of feet?
The faster you go, the more distance you cover. Counting seconds grows the gap automatically with your speed.
