Lesson 3 · Sharing the road
How do you check your blind spot before changing lanes?
Short answer
Check your mirrors, signal, then quickly look over your shoulder toward the lane you want. Change lanes only when it is clear.
Watch it play out
How to do it
- Check your rearview and side mirror.
- Signal for a few seconds so others know your plan.
- Turn your head and glance over your shoulder through the side window.
- Move over smoothly, keeping your speed.
Why the rule works this way
Every car has blind spots beside the rear corners where a whole car can hide. Only a head check covers them.
Common mistakes
- Relying on mirrors alone.
- Turning the steering wheel while you look over your shoulder.
Questions people ask
Do blind spot monitors replace the shoulder check?
No. They help, but they can miss motorcycles, cyclists and fast cars. Always look.
