Lesson 4 · More intersections
What do you do when pulling out of a driveway?
Short answer
Stop before the sidewalk, yield to people walking, then yield to traffic on the road. Go only when it is clear.
Watch it play out
How to do it
- Stop before the sidewalk, not at the curb.
- Let anyone walking or biking on the sidewalk pass.
- Edge forward slowly if you cannot see, then stop again.
- Wait for a safe gap and turn into the nearest lane.
Why the rule works this way
People on the sidewalk and drivers on the road are not expecting you. You are entering their path, so it is your job to wait.
Common mistakes
- Stopping with your car already blocking the sidewalk.
- Watching only for cars and missing a walker or child on a bike.
Questions people ask
Does the same rule apply to alleys and parking lots?
Yes. Any time you enter a road from a driveway, alley or private road, you yield to pedestrians and traffic.
