Lesson 4 · More intersections
What do you do when a person with a white cane is crossing?
Short answer
Stop and give them the right of way, even if they are not in a crosswalk. Wait until they are fully across, and do not honk.
Watch it play out
How to do it
- Stop well back from the crosswalk.
- Stay stopped until they are completely out of the road.
- Do not honk, rev your engine or wave them across.
- Do not stop in the crosswalk, which can block their path.
Why the rule works this way
A person who is blind relies on sound and on drivers behaving predictably. A stopped, quiet car is the safest signal you can give.
Common mistakes
- Honking to tell them it is safe.
- Pulling into the crosswalk while they are still crossing.
