Lesson 4 · More intersections

What do you do if an emergency vehicle comes while your light is green?

Short answer

Do not enter the intersection. Stop, or pull to the right if you can do so safely, and let the emergency vehicle pass, even on a green light.

Watch it play out

How to do it

  1. Listen and look in all directions when you hear a siren.
  2. Do not enter the intersection, even on a green light.
  3. If you are already in the intersection, clear it, then pull to the right and stop.
  4. Watch for a second emergency vehicle before you go.

Why the rule works this way

Emergency drivers expect traffic to stop for them. Cars that enter the intersection on a green light are a common cause of these crashes.

Common mistakes

  • Stopping in the middle of the intersection.
  • Going as soon as the first emergency vehicle passes.
