Rules of the road
Lesson 2 · Turns and crossings

Do you have to yield to pedestrians when turning on green?

Short answer

Yes. A green light does not let you turn through people. Anyone crossing the street you are turning onto goes first.

Watch it play out

How to do it

  1. Signal and slow down before the turn.
  2. Look at the crosswalk on the street you are turning onto.
  3. Wait in the intersection, wheels straight, until people are out of your path.
  4. Complete the turn.

Why the rule works this way

Pedestrians get a walk signal at the same time as your green. Their crosswalk runs right across your turning path.

Common mistakes

  • Watching only for cars and missing the person on foot.
  • Rushing to beat someone who is about to step off the curb.

Questions people ask

What if the walk signal is flashing?

People already in the crosswalk still have the right of way. Wait for them to finish.
