Lesson 2 · Turns and crossings
Who goes first: the car going straight or the car turning left?
Short answer
The car going straight. When two cars facing each other arrive together, the left-turning car waits.
Watch it play out
How to do it
- Stop and check who else has stopped.
- If the car across from you is turning left and you are going straight, you go first.
- If you are the one turning left, wait for the straight car to clear.
Why the rule works this way
A left turn crosses the other driver's path. Going straight does not cross anyone, so it is the safer move to clear first.
Common mistakes
- Turning left in front of a car going straight.
- Not signaling, so the other driver cannot tell what you are doing.
Questions people ask
What if we are both turning left?
You can usually both turn at once, passing each other driver side to driver side.
