Rules of the road
Lesson 7 · Trucks, bikes and buses

Why do trucks swing wide when turning right?

Short answer

Long trucks need extra room, so they often swing left before turning right. Never try to squeeze between a turning truck and the curb.

Watch it play out

How to do it

  1. Watch the turn signal, not just the direction the truck moves.
  2. Stay back and out of the space on the truck's right.
  3. Wait until the truck has completed its turn.
  4. Then continue when the way is clear.

Why the rule works this way

The rear wheels of a long trailer follow a tighter path than the cab. A car in that gap can be crushed against the curb.

Common mistakes

  • Squeezing into the gap on the right side.
  • Stopping too close behind the truck at a light.
