Lesson 7 · Trucks, bikes and buses
How should you share the road with motorcycles?
Short answer
Give a motorcycle a full lane, just like a car. Never share the lane to pass, and leave extra following distance.
Watch it play out
How to do it
- Leave at least a 3 to 4 second gap behind a motorcycle.
- Look twice for motorcycles before turning or changing lanes.
- Pass using the other lane, never beside them in their lane.
- Give them extra room when you return to the lane.
Why the rule works this way
Riders move within the lane to avoid potholes and wind. Motorcycles are small and easy to miss, and riders have little protection.
Common mistakes
- Turning left in front of an oncoming motorcycle.
- Following too closely.
Questions people ask
Why do riders change position in the lane?
To be seen and to avoid hazards. It does not mean there is room to share.
