Lesson 8 · Parking
Which way do you turn your wheels on a hill with no curb?
Short answer
Toward the edge of the road, to the right, whether you face uphill or downhill. If the car rolls, it rolls off the road, not into traffic.

How to do it
- Pull as far off the road as you safely can.
- Turn the wheels toward the edge of the road.
- Set the parking brake.
- Put the car in park, or in gear for a manual transmission.
Why the rule works this way
Without a curb, the only safe direction to roll is away from traffic.
Common mistakes
- Using the uphill curb rule when there is no curb.
- Parking partly in the travel lane.
In VirginiaNo curb, uphill or downhill: wheels right, toward the edge of the road. See all Virginia rules
