What does the hov lane sign mean?

HOV lane

Lane only for vehicles with at least the posted number of people, during the posted hours. Check the number: 2+ means at least two people, including the driver.

Why it looks like this

The white diamond is used only for high-occupancy vehicle (carpool) lanes. They move more people with fewer cars.

How to respond

  1. Check the number: 2+ means at least two people, including the driver.
  2. Check the hours. Outside them, the lane may be open to everyone.
Common mistakeUsing the lane alone during its hours.
