What do you do if a tire blows out?

Short answer

Hold the wheel firmly, ease off the gas, and do not brake hard. Once the car slows, pull off the road and turn on your hazard lights.

Watch it play out

How to do it

  1. Grip the wheel firmly with both hands.
  2. Take your foot off the gas. Do not brake hard.
  3. Keep the car straight as it slows.
  4. Signal, pull well off the road, and turn on your hazard lights.

Why the rule works this way

Hard braking or sharp steering right after a blowout can make you lose control. Slowing gradually keeps the car stable.

Common mistakes

  • Slamming the brakes.
  • Stopping in a travel lane.
